MOORPARK

Moorpark: Where Heritage Blooms and Arts Flourish

Nestled in Ventura County, Southern California, Moorpark carries a legacy steeped in history and a vibrant arts scene. Established in 1900, this once modest town has blossomed into a thriving community, with its population soaring from 4,000 in 1980 to over 25,000 by 1990, making it one of Ventura County's fastest-growing cities.

The town's name finds its roots in the Moorpark apricot, a fruit that once thrived in the area, symbolized by the apricot flower proudly displayed on the town's seal and flag. This apricot variety itself was named after Admiral Lord Anson's Moor Park estate in Hertfordshire, England, introduced to the region in 1688.

Central Moorpark is cradled within a valley sculpted by the Arroyo Simi river, surrounded by sweeping flatlands and mesas nestled against the base of rolling hills. Located just west of Simi Valley, it stands as a testament to nature's grandeur.

Highway 118, affectionately known as Los Angeles Avenue, divides the city. To the north of Route 118 lies Old Town Moorpark, a hub of heritage and culture. South of Route 118, newer residential communities flourish, creating a diverse and dynamic tapestry of neighborhoods.

Throughout the year, Moorpark comes alive with a range of vibrant events, each offering a unique glimpse into the town's spirit. From the lively Moorpark "Country Days" parade and festival, to American Civil War battle reenactments (recently resumed), and the beloved "Apricot Festival," there's a celebration for every season. The annual fireworks extravaganza on July 3rd captivates hearts, allowing residents to revel in a sky ablaze with color. And in August, the Moorpark Film Festival showcases cinematic artistry in all its glory.

The arts hold a special place in Moorpark's heart. The city established an "Arts in Public Places" (AIPP) program in 2005, later giving rise to the Arts Commission in 2006. Their joint efforts have not only enhanced the visual and performing arts but also birthed an Arts Master Plan, ushering in a new era of creativity and cultural expression.

In Moorpark, tradition meets innovation, and history mingles with the avant-garde. Here, the past is celebrated, the present is vibrant, and the future promises even greater artistic heights.
